Ginkgo Projects is leading the Art Therapeutic Design (ATD) programme for the new building at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh. The new building will be home to the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People, the Department of Clinical Neuroscience and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Edinburgh.
The ATD programme consists of over twenty projects and a team of over thirty artists, designers and makers, forming one of the largest art in healthcare programmes in the UK. At the beginning of the process, an Art and Therapeutic design group was established consisting of the NHS project team, key staff, NHS users and the two main charities; the Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation and the Sick Kids Friends Foundation. This group worked together to decide on and set out the main prioritised project strands for enhancement.
The emphasis is on the integration and enhancement of the patient experience within arrival, waiting, treatment and ward spaces. The planning stages of several architecture and design led projects have been completed, and they are now in the process of being fabricated and installed. Balanced with these installations is a series of artist fellowships and residencies. Fellows and artists have explored ways in which creative practice can help build a wider understanding in specialist subject areas, and have explored ways to actively engage with the wider campus and city community.
