Artists’ Flags for Scotland
Client: Stirling Initiative Cultural Programme
Artist(s): Ross Sinclair, Christine Borland, David Shrigley, Simon Starling, Eva Rothschild
The prospect of a devolved Scottish Parliament in 1997 gave rise to a project that gave ten national artists the chance to explore the Scottish identity. Ten very different responses were developed by Scottish artists or artists living and practising in Scotland. Some were humorous, some were challenging, all of them questioned perceptions of nationhood. The flags were located in a circle at Stirling Bridge, site of William Wallace and Andrew de Moray’s emphatic victory of 1297 over the occupying English army of Edward I.
