The old Graphic Packaging International factory site, Fishponds

City of Bristol College

Artist printmaker Jemma Gunning was appointed to deliver the public art commission at the old Graphic Packaging International factory site in Fishponds, drawing from recent site visits to create artwork that reflects the area.

Through this new collaboration with Jemma Gunning, Ginkgo Projects continues to develop our ongoing relationship with City of Bristol College Fine Art Foundation students.

Following visits to walk and draw on site, including exploring the old factory surroundings in Fishponds, the students returned to the studio for a series of workshops with Jemma using drypoint and monoprint techniques. Their artwork will be scaled-up and printed for display around the site.

History of the site

Graphic Packaging International was based in Fishponds, Bristol for over 100 years, but moved to a new facility in Yate in 2022 to a site better-suited to the expanding business (the new facility is one of the largest and most technologically advanced sheet-fed folding carton plants in Europe.)

About Jemma Gunning

Jemma Gunning is a printmaker specialising in traditional etching and lithographic processes. Her work conveys the profound connection between artistic expression and our environment. Gunning’s prints, though initially appearing somber, unfold as visual interpretations of decay within post-industrial landscapes. Yet, a closer examination reveals a narrative of life reemerging in the ruins, as nature resiliently reclaims desolate wastelands, giving rise to new ecosystems.
