THORNBURY PUBLIC ART COMMISSION
Artist: Denman+Gould
Client: Miller Homes
Date: Installing Autumn 2024
Location: Thornbury
The geology of Thornbury formed the foundation of this public artwork by Denman+Gould, becoming a visual and constructional motif for this project in the wild areas of a new housing development on the outskirts of Thornbury.
Using the idea of sedimentary layers to inform a rammed earth-inspired casting method, the sculptures echo the shapes and layers of geological survey charts from Thornbury and the earthworks that the artists found near the site.
Creating stepping stone-like forms, the work offers people places to sit, as well as encouraging exploration and engagement with the wilder areas of the site.
The rammed cement tower contains insect-supporting sections and is hollow inside to provide for insects and nesting creatures. Their core is a softer earth mix to create habitat for burrowing bees and insects.
Constructed in sections, the pieces are made using UV-stable pigments, earth and pressed layers of sand, stone, (minimal) cement, and water. The layers have entry points for masonry and solitary bees to gain entry and holes for insects to create a habitat. The colours reference the rich earth tones found at the site.
Carved Oak bird and bat nesting provision will support species found in the woodland at the site. These were modelled on larch cones and seed pods found within the woodland. The carved oak sculptures are hollow to allow space for birds to nest and creatures to shelter.

The practice of Denman + Gould is deeply informed by the use of place-specific materials, embedding these in work that communicates thoughtful, expressive craftsmanship and making techniques.
